
This Thursday sees the topping-out ceremony for the new A-Plus terminal area at Frankfurt Airport. The new facility expands the terminal areas used by Lufthansa, and was required regardless of the airport expansion program so as to accommodate large-capacity Airbus A380 and Boeing B747-8 aircraft.

Borgo Trento Hospital is of general importance for northern Italy. The new block now completed in the first phase has nine storeys overall, and is in the centre of the century-old hospital site.

The first phase of the refurbishment and enlargement of the state School of Ballet and Artistry is being inaugurated tomorrow. The present phase of construction took 30 months to complete, and comprises a new hall with ten dance rooms plus the refurbishment of the existing school building dating from the 1960s. Still to be completed (by the end of 2011) is a four-storey boarding school for 70 pupils on the same site.

The new opera house for the metropolis of Qingdao in Eastern China was opened yesterday. The design by architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Stephan Schütz with Nicolas Pomränke beat off rival bids from eleven international firms in 2004. Construction has taken just under five years.

Hanoi Museum, the new museum of Hanoi’s history, was inaugurated on Wednesday this week as part of the millennial celebrations at the Vietnamese capital. The ceremony took place in the presence of national and regional government representatives.

This Friday sees the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the new City Hall, in the presence of Mayor Frank Baranowski, Gelsenkirchen chief executive Michael von der Mühlen and the responsible architect, Prof. Volkwin Marg.

A conference center with service facilities as an extension of the new Hotel Atlantic and a public multi-storey car park with 600 spaces above and 200 spaces below the central bus station could be constructed on a 6,000m² site directly along the shore of Kiel Firth to plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners.

On 9th September, 16 months of construction work on the new extension to the town hall in Bielefeld was completed with a ceremony at which Mayor Pit Clausen gave a speech. With an area of 3,400m², the Events and Exhibition Hall can accommodate up to 5,000 visitors.

The jury of the BDA Hamburg Architecture Award has awarded the Office and Commercial Building at Hohe Bleichen 11 in the center of Hamburg a third Prize.

At the 2010 football World Cup championships in South Africa, the competition is not only a matter of sport. The stadia themselves have their own contest, for the Deutscher Stahlbau prize. This year, the prize was awarded jointly to architects gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners and structural engineers sbp schlaich bergermann und partner for Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town.

The ceremonial topping out ceremony of the terminal building as the heart of the new BBI airport for the German capital took place on 7th May. Berlin Brandenburg is (after Munich) the second completely new airport system in Germany to have take-off and landing runways operated completely separately from each other and passenger-handling midfield.

On Wednesday 14 November 2012, Magdalene Weiss will speak at the international symposium "Design for All – Space Design on Roads" in Seoul, Korea.

On Tuesday 13 November 2012, the "American Jesus Suite" concert will take place at the Berlin office: a composition by Stefan Wurz for Quartet PLUS 1, inspired by Michael Jackson’s pop songs.

The focus of Siegener Bautag 2012 is on exploring the boundaries between construction, technology, economy, ecology and form. Hence the event runs under the motto "To go to the limits…and beyond". As part of the event Prof. Dr.-Ing. h.c. Volkwin Marg will speak on the subject "Architecture as a synthesis of function, construction and interpretation" on Friday 9 November 2012.

Nicolas Pomränke will give the keynote speech on the 5th ForumMIRO in Dresden, Germany. He will speak on the subject "The architect's personal pride determines the character of the building".

On the 1st of November, the Hanse Viertel arcade in Hamburg celebrates the completion of extensive conversion . Hamburg’s traditional shopping arcade was technically upgraded and brought up to current environmental standards. As part of the press reception, which runs under the slogan "The Hanse-Viertel with a new, vibrant look", Volkwin Marg will give a talk on the architecture and the original design ideas for the shopping arcade.

In the context of the "Sustainability of buildings for mega-events - Transfer of knowledge" conference in Munich (29 to 30 October), Markus Pfisterer (gmp Director) will speak on the subject of "Functionality of mega-event buildings – Examples: FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 and 2012 UEFA European Football Championship".

The association Architekturpreis Berlin e.V. extends an invitation to a debate on the subject of "What does the future hold for Tegel airport?" at the KutscherHaus, Kurfürstendamm, Berlin on 14 August 2012. Together with other well-known speakers, Stephan Schütz will be discussing the future of Tegel airport.

At the 35th study conference “Action for a city worth living in”, the discussion will focus on the steps we need to take in order to allow for sustainable urban development that is fit for the future. The poet Heinrich Heine, one of the most important German writers of the 19th century, is the focus of the programme featuring Marianne Kaiser (recitation), Philipp Jekal (baritone) and Thomas Benke (piano). The recital will take place in gmp’s Berlin office.
