The 2012 German lighting design prize was awarded in Hamburg on 24 May 2012. In the "International Project" category, the lighting design for the "Shenzhen Universiade Sports Center" in Shenzhen, China was awarded first prize. The lighting design was carried out by lighting designers Conceptlicht GmbH, Traunreut.

Project description
The building’s effect during both day and night is determined by its crystalline structure. In order to provide clarity and make the design "readable", a neutral background is required which is provided in the form of a fabric.
To enhance the effect at night, the fabric is lit evenly all over. To achieve this, lighting strips for RGB LED are fitted to the steel construction, which in normal operation are set to a white light colour. The backlighting is also dimmable. This makes it possible to attenuate the effect on the outside as well as reduce operating costs. During the twilight phase the backlighting is operated at maximum output and as darkness increases, the intensity is reduced.

At the end of an event, the backlighting can be gradually reduced until its glow dies down after midnight. The backlighting was arranged in such a way that the light sources are not visible from any angle. Were the light sources visible, the structure would be disturbed and the effect would be lost through the contrast with the bright light sources.
