In its "Self-Portrait in Dialog" series of dialogs, the Freie Akademie der Künste in Hamburg asks which heroes and ideals have had a formative effect on the artists.

The dialogs are structured around the interviewee’s role model – the persons or ideals that had an impact on their biography. Or alternatively, when and how it became clear what, and who, one wanted to become, and who one didn’t want to become at any cost. Which experiences, impressions, turn of events, persons or setbacks had a decisive impact on the personal journey?

In the "Self-Portrait in Dialog" series, the intention is to encourage members of the Akademie der Künste to enter into a dialog with a (younger) interviewer to produce a lively, artistic/intellectual self-portrait.

Following the dialogs with Hellmuth Karasek, Uwe Timm, Christoph von Dohnányi, Ulrich Tukur and Fatih Akin, it is now the first time that – with Meinhard von Gerkan – an architect shares his story. The dialog is with architecture critic Jürgen Tietz, who is also the author of Meinhard von Gerkan’s biography, which was published last year. In recent years, Jürgen Tietz has accompanied von Gerkan all over the world to the significant places of his development – from his childhood through to his most important projects.
