The story of this development reads like a thriller staged in the middle of Hamburg: "HafenCity – secret project or how to invent a new city quarter" is the title of the latest publication edited by architect and gmp founding partner Volkwin Marg. Written by the well-known architecture critic Gert Kähler, and published by Dölling & Galitz Publishers, the book will be presented to the public on Thursday, 17 November 2016. From 11 o’clock, well-known personalities will speak on the occasion of the launch event at the Kesselhaus in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt: the Senator for Urban Development and Housing, Dorothee Stapelfeldt, the Chairman of the Board of Bundesstiftung Baukultur, Reiner Nagel, as well as Volkwin Marg and author Gert Kähler.
The 280-page book with about 100 illustrations recounts the story of how the port area between Kehrwiederspitze and Elbbrücken was secretly designated to become HafenCity, how political maneuvers prepared the largest inner city development project in Europe for five years until the sensation was broken to the public in 1997 – a new city quarter with workplaces, leisure facilities, retail outlets, and housing in the midst of the city. The book is also a study of how and whether long-term planning is possible in the context of contemporary political practice.
