First prize in Aachen: the jury of the competition for the Corporate Center of the Trianel municipal utilities network has selected the submission by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) as the winning entry.

The Academic Senate of Hamburg’s HafenCity University (HCU) has unanimously decided to award an honorary doctorate in architecture to the well-known Hamburg architect and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit, Professor Volkwin Marg. The awards ceremony takes place on Friday 27 April at the Hamburg Town Hall.

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been awarded first prize according to the jury in an international competition to build the Culture Center in the newly created Changzhou city center - competing with KSP – Jürgen Engel Architects, Arata Isozaki and other leading practices.

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners have won first prize with their design for the new buildings of the Karlsruhe Medical Centre. The competition focused on the 2015 master plan and was open to 15 selected practices.

Following their success in winning first prize in an international competition, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been commissioned to design the new southern railway station in Hangzhou. The project involves the conversion and extension of the station in the Xiao Shan district to the south of the Qiantang river; after the eastern and main railway stations it will be the third largest railway station of this metropolis.

The exhibition "2011 DAM award for architecture in Germany – The 23 best buildings in/from Germany" in Frankfurt also includes an exhibit of the Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa.

The special exhibition by Hamburg architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners entitled "On Old Foundations", and "The Living Fagus Factory Monument" photographic exhibition, will continue to be open to visitors this year as part of the Fagus Gropius exhi-bition. The exhibitions have already attracted several thousand visitors!

An ecologically designed city quarter for living and working is currently being developed in China’s Qingdao, on the coast of the Yellow Sea, to plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The foundation stone will be laid on 6 December by Ernst Burgbacher, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Wang Chao, the Chinese Vice-Minister of Economics.

The stadiums built by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa received the IOC/IAKS Award on 26 October 2011.

After a construction period of two and a half years, von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (gmp) have completed the Tianjin West Railway Station in China. The new intersection, which is located about 130 kilometers south-west of Beijing, serves as a stop on the high-speed line between the Chinese capital and Shanghai.

The inauguration of the new Palacongressi di Rimini conference center will take place on 15 October 2011. The center, which was designed by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (gmp), who had already designed the Rimini exhibition center, was completed in 2010.

Following their success in winning first prize in an international competition, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been commissioned to realize a tower block complex of ten buildings in Nanjing. The design by gmp is or a financial enterprise center on a site of about 80,000 square meters in this large eastern Chinese metropolis.

To mark the occasion of the Universiade, which will take place from 12th to 23rd August 2011, the Universiade sports center and Bao’an stadium will be opened tomorrow in Shenzhen, southern China.

The twenty-storey Jiaming Center office block designed by Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners has been awarded gold-standard LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The sports complex was designed and built by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), who won the competitive bidding in 2008, and constructed it in under two and a half years.

The German Lighting Design Prize 2011 was awarded in Cologne on 5th May 2011. The lighting design for the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban was awarded first prize in the International Project category. The lighting design was the work of the lighting-design firm Conceptlicht.

Four years after the foundation stone was laid, the Chinese National Museum in Beijing opens its doors to the public on 1st April 2011. The rebuilding and extension scheme to plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) combines the former Chinese History Museum and Chinese Revolutionary Museum.

Architects von Gerkan, Marg & Partners (gmp), in consortium with landscape architects Bernard & Sattler, have won the competition for the reconstruction of the Federal Environmental Office building in Bismarckplatz in Berlin.

The 25-storey Soho Beijing Residence apartment block designed by gmp was awarded the prize for the best architectural design of the year at the 5th Golden Plate selection in Guangzhou, China.

This Thursday sees the topping-out ceremony for the new A-Plus terminal area at Frankfurt Airport. The new facility expands the terminal areas used by Lufthansa, and was required regardless of the airport expansion program so as to accommodate large-capacity Airbus A380 and Boeing B747-8 aircraft.

Borgo Trento Hospital is of general importance for northern Italy. The new block now completed in the first phase has nine storeys overall, and is in the centre of the century-old hospital site.

The first phase of the refurbishment and enlargement of the state School of Ballet and Artistry is being inaugurated tomorrow. The present phase of construction took 30 months to complete, and comprises a new hall with ten dance rooms plus the refurbishment of the existing school building dating from the 1960s. Still to be completed (by the end of 2011) is a four-storey boarding school for 70 pupils on the same site.

The new opera house for the metropolis of Qingdao in Eastern China was opened yesterday. The design by architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Stephan Schütz with Nicolas Pomränke beat off rival bids from eleven international firms in 2004. Construction has taken just under five years.

Hanoi Museum, the new museum of Hanoi’s history, was inaugurated on Wednesday this week as part of the millennial celebrations at the Vietnamese capital. The ceremony took place in the presence of national and regional government representatives.

This Friday sees the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the new City Hall, in the presence of Mayor Frank Baranowski, Gelsenkirchen chief executive Michael von der Mühlen and the responsible architect, Prof. Volkwin Marg.

A conference center with service facilities as an extension of the new Hotel Atlantic and a public multi-storey car park with 600 spaces above and 200 spaces below the central bus station could be constructed on a 6,000m² site directly along the shore of Kiel Firth to plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners.

On 9th September, 16 months of construction work on the new extension to the town hall in Bielefeld was completed with a ceremony at which Mayor Pit Clausen gave a speech. With an area of 3,400m², the Events and Exhibition Hall can accommodate up to 5,000 visitors.

The jury of the BDA Hamburg Architecture Award has awarded the Office and Commercial Building at Hohe Bleichen 11 in the center of Hamburg a third Prize.

At the 2010 football World Cup championships in South Africa, the competition is not only a matter of sport. The stadia themselves have their own contest, for the Deutscher Stahlbau prize. This year, the prize was awarded jointly to architects gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners and structural engineers sbp schlaich bergermann und partner for Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town.

The ceremonial topping out ceremony of the terminal building as the heart of the new BBI airport for the German capital took place on 7th May. Berlin Brandenburg is (after Munich) the second completely new airport system in Germany to have take-off and landing runways operated completely separately from each other and passenger-handling midfield.

Johann von Mansberg (gmp Director) has been invited as a guest speaker by the "bridge to the future" in China and, on 15 May, will present outstanding gmp projects in China and Germany.

As part of the "2018 FIFA World Cup Russia: Developing country through football" event in Moscow, Hubert Nienhoff will speak on "gmp - Stadia for the FIFA World Cup".

As part of the "MEED Sports Stadia" event in Doha/Qatar, Markus Pfisterer (gmp Director) will speak on the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland. In his talk on 16 April he will report in particular on the challenges presented by the structural design of the roof.

During the "fensterbau frontale 2012" trade exhibition, which takes place in Nuremberg from 21 to 24 March, Prof. Meinhard von Gerkan will talk in the Architect’s Area on the subject of building in China.
