The œuvre of the architect's office gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner, founded by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg in 1965, ranges from transport buildings, museums and theatres to office and shopping complexes in many national and international locations. However, few people know that the architects have also planned and built more than 20 villas and apartment houses. These individual buildings combine tradition and the modern age using a language of forms and materials primarily related to the genius loci: whether the façade is wood, rendering or glass - each villa blends into the surroundings topography in a unique way.
This exhibition documents outstanding examples of contemporary individual house architecture with photos and plans. It provides abundant inspiration for architects and their clients, as well as for aficionados of good architecture.
A book also entitled "Private Houses" currently published by Jovis Verlag, Germany documents in detail the collection of individual houses designed by gmp architects. Furthermore, the well-known author Gert Kähler investigates the history of living and living spaces, and - in conversation with the architects - examines their own personal relationship to living, well-being and materiality.
It is a favourable completion of the shown exhibition.
