Meinhard von Gerkan is one of the most distinguished and successful architects and university teachers in Germany. This is the first collected edition of his writings on architecture.
All aspects of the subject come under the lens. Some arise from his career as a practising architect in the firm he founded with Volkwin Marg in 1965, which now has four further partners and over 200 staff in Hamburg, Berlin, Aachen, Braunschweig and Leipzig.
He covers the whole bandwidth of modern building work, ranging from railway stations to family houses, and airports to concert halls and museums.
His work is notable for simplicity in its functional and design coherence, its formal reticence and homogeneity of material.
Other aspects have developed from his research and teaching work. Meinhard von Gerkan is full Professor of Architecture and Design at Braunschweig University of Technology.
He is also in demand outside the university, as papers in specialist periodicals and articles in the daily press bear out. He is sought-after as a guest speaker at conferences and award ceremonies, probably because he does not make official speeches but always offers considered observations on architecture and the conditions in which it is created. This side of his work is reflected in the present volume.
