To build a historic city museum in the capital of a country that is in the throes of rapid political and commercial change is a challenge to all those involved. What is the social function of this museum? How should it present itself in terms of architecture and urban design? What has evolved is a solitary building with terraces cantilevering towards the top, situated in the midst of an artificial park with water features providing large areas for external exhibits.

The architects responsible for the design explain the project in this volume. The architecture of the Hanoi Museum is presented with the help of drawings, photographs and texts, and the architectural journalist, Falk Jaeger, reviews the building in the context of architectural history.
