In October 2016, Volkwin Marg, one of the best known and most successful architects in Germany, has celebrated his 80th birthday. For this occasion he has given eleven interviews on subjects that have significantly affected his work and life – with friends and colleagues, but also with people whose acquaintance he only made on that occasion and whose work he is interested in. These include journalist Robert Leicht, Hamburg’s Oberbaudirektor Jörn Walter, architectural historian Winfried Nerdinger, consulting engineer Werner Sobek, and publisher Nikolaus Gelpke.

The result is a book which, in direct and dynamic conversation, offers not only an insight into an extraordinary and extraordinarily multi-faceted life, but also shows how even very diverse aspects such as music and shipbuilding, through to thoughts on totalitarian regimes, can be valuable for the consideration and understanding of architecture – the most cross-connected of all arts.
