Although gmp is building all over the world, the projects are most often located in German and Chinese context. In his lecture, Volkmar Sievers will show the tension that arises when an office works in two such different cultural circles showing two projects and one detail. The Kunsthalle Mannheim, the most important new German museum building of recent times, is the first subject of his lecture. The concept of the city within the city developed for this purpose refers to Baroque European urban planning, which also brought Mannheim to life as a grid city planned on the drawing board. The second project focuses on the headquarters of the Chinese Hengdian Group. Located in Hangzhou, one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, today the city balances between tradition and booming prosperity. While in Mannheim the city moved into the building on a small scale, in Hangzhou it is nature that enlivens the office building with greenery in large atriums. The door handle, which gmp developed in collaboration with FSB and which is used in both projects, shows that the same design principles ultimately apply despite different cultural contexts.
