Topping-out ceremony for the new A-Plus terminal extension in Frankfurt

This Thursday sees the topping-out ceremony for the new A-Plus terminal area at Frankfurt Airport. Witnessing the ceremony will be the president of Fraport AG, Dr. Stefan Schulte, and the senior vice-president for Hub Management/Frankfurt, Dr. Karl-Rudolf Rupprecht. In a European contract procedure organized in 2006, architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners were awarded the overall contract for design and planning. The new building involves extending Terminal 1 towards the west as a passenger area, and is scheduled for completion by 2012.

On completion, the new concourse with a total area of around 185,000 m² can handle up to six million passengers per annum. Including the adjoining area, total length is around 790 m.

The new facility expands the terminal areas used by Lufthansa, and was required regardless of the airport expansion program so as to accommodate large-capacity Airbus A380 and Boeing B747-8 aircraft. In addition, from summer 2011, there will be four levels available for passenger-handling, with short transits, direct boarding and a clear layout guaranteeing optimum orientation and minimal changing times.
