The future of the historic Nautical College in Hamburg is secured after the acquisition of the building by the gmp Foundation. The planned utilization scheme for the building drawn up under the direction of Prof. Meinhard von Gerkan means that this special location will once again be accessible to public cultural life.
With the occupation of the upper floors by the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) and the Brand Academy, the building will regain its status as an educational institution and be filled with student life.
The cultural events put on by the two institutions and Kultwerk West and the catering facilities on the shipping terraces facing the Elbe will plug the building into public cultural life in the area, and bring back vitality to the park areas on Elbberg.
A historic monument set high above the River Elbe, the Nautical College is a landmark on the urban scene. The renovation and circumspect modernization the gmp Foundation proposes will preserve the building and restore its old maritime glory.
The aac and the Brand Academy offer courses for German and international graduates that are unique in Germany. Both institutions are recent additions to the cultural and educational life in Hamburg. They are leaders in their respective disciplines, their approaches possessing outstanding unique features even in an international context.
The Hamburg-based gmp Foundation was set up in 2007 by the architectural firm of von Gerkan, Marg & Partners. Its purpose is to stimulate and train students and graduates, and promote research in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture and landscape conservation at home and abroad.< Aktuelles Projekt
