Since 4 December 2014, Meinhard von Gerkan has been Consulting Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the renowned Tongji University in Shanghai. He was handed his certificate of appointment by Prof. Zheng Shiling, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the presence of representatives of the Faculty and numerous students.
The Gyula Trebitsch school at Hamburg will be extended and the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been commissioned to build the extended replacement building to their designs. This was the result of the design commission negotiated under VOF (German procedure for commissioning freelance services) following the competition win.
With the completion of the transport and landscaped areas, the conversion and extension of the workshops for the scenery and costumes of the Städtische Bühnen were completed on time for the new 2014/2015 season.
Meinhard von Gerkan has been honoured in China with a guest professorship at the well-established Southeast University of Nanjing. The award was presented to him by Wang Jianguo, Dean of the Architecture Faculty at the university, which was founded in 1902, during the opening of the exhibition entitled “Designing in Dialogue. The Architecture of von Gerkan, Marg and Partners”.
Yesterday, at the awards ceremony of the Iconic Awards 2014 in Munich, the Qingdao Grand Theatre and the Berlin State Ballet School were awarded Best of Best and Winner respectively in the Architecture category.
Building on old foundations: Is there a better place than Venice to stage an exhibition on this subject? Is there any other place that depends to the same degree on its foundations, the millions of oak piles on which the city is founded – or a place similarly at risk? Venice is the epitome of a city which engages with its own architectural past.
After a construction period of almost two years, Trianel GmbH this summer moved into its company headquarters in Aachen, which had been designed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners. The utility company now has over 300 employees in the new building who previously were spread out over three locations in Aachen. The office block has a floor area of 6,300 square metres and can accommodate up to 430 members of staff.

The name Brooklyn Rapid Transit Powerhouse refers to a large coal-fired power station built at the end of the 19th century to generate electricity for Brooklyn’s streetcar system. Built as a steel skeleton construction typical of the time with a representative façade composed of red-brown brick, the building is situated on an extensive site along the branching Gowanus Canal, which until decommissioning was the supply route for the power plant’s coal and water.

Good architecture is created in a dialogue. And it takes social responsibility. An optimal solution for a building project can only be achieved when one asks the right questions. Often these are unusual questions, sometimes simple, and frequently they seem to want to combine what cannot be combined. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) are designing the new rehearsal building for the ballet company of Deutsche Oper am Rhein. In a consortium with HOCHTIEF Solutions, they were commissioned by Düsseldorf City Council in a PPP scheme. The new ballet building will be created on the historic site of the former Rheinbahn depot “am Steinberg” in Düsseldorf, between the listed tramway depot and the back of the housing development at Kopernikusstrasse.
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been successful in winning the competition for three office towers near the southern railway station in Shanghai, and have been commissioned with the design of the project. Vanke Co., Ltd. is one of the largest real estate companies for housing in China and wants to extend its range of activities into the office building sector; for this purpose, the company has selected a site in a desirable up-and-coming business area.
In the southern Chinese city of Dongguan – a city of several million – a basketball stadium has been completed to plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The building can be seen from afar and is a landmark that provides identity and orientation to the people in the new district of Liaobu. The stadium has space for nearly 15,000 visitors and can be used for sports and other events; it is the new main competition venue for one of the most successful Chinese basketball teams, the Dongguan Leopards.
At Tesdorpfstrasse 8 in Hamburg, near the Dammtor railway station, a new office building has been completed to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) which meets top energy conservation standards and is likely to receive the gold certificate under DGNB rules.
Five books on the work, views and approaches of the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been published in recent months. The œuvre of the practice is very diverse, and similarly the authors approach their subjects – which couldn’t be more varied - in very different ways: from building in a historic context via the design and construction of Chinese cultural venues through to a view behind the curtain of large German construction sites, the books illustrate examples of gmp’s work in text and images.
The design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, with JB Ferrari, for a new children’s hospital at the Lausanne University Hospital has won first prize in an international competition. The hospital is to provide 85 beds and an accident and emergency unit for children, and is provisionally scheduled to open in 2019. The design concept includes light-flooded open areas with much greenery, which are intended to make a hospital stay as agreeable as possible for patients and their relatives. Today, the entry will be presented to the public in Lausanne.
A new football stadium for Tripoli: the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Stadium in the new sports park, which was designed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) took place on Wednesday 26 February 2014. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Libyan Prime Minister, Ali Seidan, the German Ambassador, Christian Much, the football legend Franz Beckenbauer and the gmp Project Manager, Hans-Joachim Paap. gmp has been commissioned with the scheme design for the project as well as the detailed design.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new construction of the German Service Centre in Foshan, a city in the south of China, will take place on 25 February 2014. In 2013, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners were successful in winning this competition which was open to German architectural practices with a Chinese partner.

On Monday 8 December 2014, Volkwin Marg will speak at the “Literarische Salon” in Hannover on the architecture of sports stadiums.
On Thursday, 4 December 2014, Meinhard von Gerkan will give a lecture at Tongji CAUP, in a ceremony for conferring him as Advisory Professor of Tongji University. All colleagues are all welcome to attend.

gmp has designed the old and the new airport for Berlin. The former, Tegel, is still praised, the latter, Berlin Brandenburg, has still not been opened. It seems that it is not possible to approach the future of airport construction responsibly without knowing its past. Meinhard von Gerkan, Hartmut Mehdorn, Robert Grosch and Philipp Bouteiller provide remininscences, assessments and pleas.
