Topping-out ceremony for the new A-Plus terminal extension in Frankfurt
This Thursday sees the topping-out ceremony for the new A-Plus terminal area at Frankfurt Airport. The new facility expands the terminal areas used by Lufthansa, and was required regardless of the airport expansion program so as to accommodate large-capacity Airbus A380 and Boeing B747-8 aircraft.

First phase of State Ballet School of Berlin handed over
The first phase of the refurbishment and enlargement of the state School of Ballet and Artistry is being inaugurated tomorrow. The present phase of construction took 30 months to complete, and comprises a new hall with ten dance rooms plus the refurbishment of the existing school building dating from the 1960s. Still to be completed (by the end of 2011) is a four-storey boarding school for 70 pupils on the same site.

Qingdao Grand Theater opens after five years’ construction work
The new opera house for the metropolis of Qingdao in Eastern China was opened yesterday. The design by architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Stephan Schütz with Nicolas Pomränke beat off rival bids from eleven international firms in 2004. Construction has taken just under five years.

Hanoi Museum, the new museum of Hanoi’s history, was inaugurated on Wednesday this week as part of the millennial celebrations at the Vietnamese capital. The ceremony took place in the presence of national and regional government representatives.

gmp Wins Ideas Competition for the Proposed Kiel Central Bus Station Development
A conference center with service facilities as an extension of the new Hotel Atlantic and a public multi-storey car park with 600 spaces above and 200 spaces below the central bus station could be constructed on a 6,000m² site directly along the shore of Kiel Firth to plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners.

On 9th September, 16 months of construction work on the new extension to the town hall in Bielefeld was completed with a ceremony at which Mayor Pit Clausen gave a speech. With an area of 3,400m², the Events and Exhibition Hall can accommodate up to 5,000 visitors.

"German steel architecture is champion!" Cape Town Stadium in South Africa wins steel industry prize
At the 2010 football World Cup championships in South Africa, the competition is not only a matter of sport. The stadia themselves have their own contest, for the Deutscher Stahlbau prize. This year, the prize was awarded jointly to architects gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners and structural engineers sbp schlaich bergermann und partner for Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town.

Topping out ceremony for the terminal building of BBI Berlin Brandenburg International Airport.
The ceremonial topping out ceremony of the terminal building as the heart of the new BBI airport for the German capital took place on 7th May. Berlin Brandenburg is (after Munich) the second completely new airport system in Germany to have take-off and landing runways operated completely separately from each other and passenger-handling midfield.
