Half a year after the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new sports and leisure pool complex, „am Brauhausberg“, the topping-out ceremony for the project – which is currently being built to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partners (gmp) – will take place on 18 December.
On 26 November 2015, the “Lines of thought” exhibition opened at St. Peter’s Church in Riga, where Meinhard von Gerkan was baptized in 1935. The exhibition will run until 31 January 2016, and shows architectural designs by Meinhard von Gerkan created during the last 50 years. More than 150 original sketches are shown in St. Peter’s Church. First drawings for the design of the Berlin Tegel Airport – the project with which the practice’s history began – are presented as well as those for Berlin’s main railway station and the most important projects in Riga.
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (Aachen) have been commissioned with the conversion and refurbishment of Ludwigspark Stadium in Saarbrücken. Conspicuous membrane roofs and a linking circulation level create a cohesive ensemble, which integrates the place’s landmarks to form a unique identity.
New headquarters for the 4,000 employees of CNPEC, the power corporation, are being built in Shenzhen to plans by gmp Architects – von Gerkan, Marg and Partners. For the new building in Longgang, in the east of the southern Chinese metropolis, the company had invited prominent architects such as OMA (Rotterdam), KPF (New York), Henn Architects (Munich) and other international practices to take part in a competition, in which gmp was selected as the winner.
The architects, von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, have completed the extension and conversion of Martin Luther School at Rimbach in 2015. The 1300 students of the grammar school, which is one of the most important educational establishments in Germany’s Odenwald region and has music as a key subject area, now have at their disposal 48 class rooms and 19 specialist subject rooms for music, art, and natural sciences.
At the beginning of 2015, the Dayuan International Center was completed in the western Chinese business metropolis Chengdu to plans by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners. The urban ensemble comprises buildings for housing, working and commerce. It is part of the Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone development area to the south of the provincial capital.
On 27 October the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) awarded an All Time Award for the Berlin Olympic Stadium at Koelnmesse’s Congress Centre North. The award was given in honor of both the operating company, Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH, and the designers of the extensive conversion (2000 to 2004), gmp – Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, Berlin.
On Saturday, 24 October 2015, the foundation stone laying ceremony for „German House“ took place in Ho Chi Minh City. The building will be constructed in accordance with plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners. The building is designed to represent the Federal Republic of Germany, and in future will accommodate the German Consulate General with the associated visa office, trade associations, cultural organizations and the local offices of German companies
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners were able to prevail against the competition in the project for Vietnam’s National Exhibition and Trade Fair Center. From nine designs by international architects such as SAMOO Architects & Engineers (Korea), Atkins (Hong Kong) and NIKKEN SEKKEI (Japan), the client, Vingroup, selected the master plan and architectural concept of the Hamburg architects, and announced the result on the 3rd of October.
Construction work on the SIP Sports Centre has started in the Chinese city of Suzhou. The multi-functional sports center in Suzhou Industrial Park, designed by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, has been scheduled for completion in 2017.
The urban ensemble “Guanghualu SOHO 2“ for the SOHO China Group designed by architects von Gerkan, Marg and partners (gmp) has been completed in Beijing’s Central Business District. The site at the Guanghua Lu is located in one of the prominent urban districts in the eastern center of Beijing, and consists of five houses with a curved building shape.
The new rehearsal building for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein ballet company was opened on 4 September 2015 after a construction period of less than ten months. In a consortium with HOCHTIEF Solutions, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) carried out the new construction on the historic site of the former Rheinbahn depot „am Steinberg“ in Düsseldorf as part of a PPP contract placed by Düsseldorf City Council.
The new construction of Exhibition Hall 19/20 with its adjoining conference area, designed by gmp, is located at the northern main entrance of the exhibition grounds of Deutsche Messe AG in Hanover. The project has now been completed after a construction period of one and a half years.
The design for SOHO Fuxing Lu, an urban quarter with restaurants, shops and offices primarily intended for young start-up companies, adopts the scale and orientation of the neighboring blocks, integrates existing historic buildings and, in this way, adds to the important urban seam in the inner city using the existing urban development structure.
The 3Cubes office building designed by gmp for the Caohejing Business Park in the western part of Shanghai have now been completed. The office building complex with service functions in the basement floors has a total gross floor area of 60,000m² and consists of three cubic building volumes with different heights of between 35 m and 60 m.
China’s largest insurance company, China Life Insurance Company, has moved into its new Data Center in Shanghai-Pudong. After a design and construction period of six years – which is on the long side for China – the complex designed by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) was completed in June.
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have won the design competition for the new construction of the Suzhou Library in China. The start of construction has been scheduled for 2016 and the opening of the complex for the end of 2017.

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) are designing the ICICLE Fashion Industry Park for the Chinese fashion brand ICICLE; the Centre includes a production facility with logistics center for the e-commerce business, as well as design and production workplaces with the company’s associated showrooms.
SF Express Group Co., Ltd, one of China’s leading logistics companies with over 340,000 employees worldwide, is intending to construct a new company headquarter building in the flourishing Qianhai District in Shenzhen. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) were successful in winning first prize in the international competition for the new construction of the SF Express Headquarter Building, and the practice has been commissioned with the design of the high-rise office building with a gross floor area of 100,000 m².
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) were awarded 1st prize for their competition entry for the new construction of the Guangzhou City Museum. At the same time, Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos (Madrid/Berlin) won the competition for the adjacent Science Museum which, together with the city’s new Art Museum (commissioned a year ago and being designed by Thomas Herzog Architects), will form the central cultural precinct of this third-largest Chinese city.
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have won the international competition for the new construction of an IT industrial operation center with adjacent high-rise office block in Guangzhou for China Unicom, one of the leading Chinese telecommunications companies, and have been commissioned to carry out the design.
With a total area of almost 15 square kilometers and a planned gross floor area of approx. 30 million square meters, by 2020 the Qianhai district in Shenzhen will be developed into the most important transport intersection and commercial center in the Pearl River delta. Hong Kong can be reached from here within 30 minutes, and all other important cities in the region within an hour.
The focus of the Shenzhen metropolis is on national and international IT research and development. A core project for strengthening the IT industry is the „Shenzhen Software Industry Base“, for the first plot of which the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners won the design commission as part of an international competition in 2009; this has now been completed.
The architects practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) has – in a VOF negotiation procedure - been awarded the contract for the total refurbishment and modernization of the Mollier Building at Dresden Technical University.
“What is Vietnamese building culture?” This question is asked in a country the architecture of which was for many years defined by the former colonial powers, France and Japan, and by the separation of the country into North and South Vietnam with the two capitals, Hanoi and Saigon.
Precisely forty years after its introduction, the Berlin Chair designed by Meinhard von Gerkan for the furniture maker Walter Knoll is being re-launched. At this year’s Milan Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile) from 14 to 19 April, Walter Knoll is presenting the re-edition of the chair designed by von Gerkan in 1975 for the VIP lounge of Berlin Tegel Airport, which was also designed by him.
With the exhibition „On old foundations. Building in a historic context“, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) exhibit a side of their oeuvre that is less well known to the general public: how to deal with historic buildings.

Meinhard von Gerkan was born in Riga on 3 January 1935; the city is located in Latvia which, at the time, was an independent country with a population of Latvians, Russians and Germans. The family belonged to the upper class of the German-Baltic population which – following the non-aggression agreement between Stalin and Hitler and the resulting cession of the Baltic states to the Soviet Union – was largely resettled in the Polish areas which had been under occupation since the beginning of the war.
On Tuesday, December 10, Nikolaus Goetze will speak at the second congress of the Ho Chi Minh City Architect Association. In his lecture "Designing in Dialogue" he will discuss the importance of dialogic design using the example of numerous projects from the gmp portfolio. The lecture will be followed by a discussion between invited guests and the audience.
Public discussion about the "Stadteingang Elbbrücken" – jury chairman Prof. Kees Christiaanse will present the designs of the three participating teams, including gmp with WES LAndschaftsArchitektur.
On Saturday, Evelyn Pasdzierny of gmp and Andreas Kachel of WES will present the draft for a clearly formulated entrance to the city of Hamburg crossing the Elbe bridges. Three renowned architecture and landscape planning teams had worked on the task.

At BAU China 2019, Stephan Schütz will give a lecture on renovating existing buildings using German and Chinese examples.
On Monday, November 4, 2019 at 7 pm, gmp and FSB host a film screening of “Years of Construction – Baujahre [2013 – 2018]”, documenting the building process of the Kunsthalle Mannheim. Following the screening, the internationally renowned German film pioneer and illustrator Heinz Emigholz will be present for a discussion with gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze and is happy to answer questions from the audience.
In the lecture series "On the Duty and the Power of Architecture", organized by the Section Architecture of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, international architecture offices present their current work. Volkwin Marg will be a guest on October 22. His lecture and the subsequent discussion with the architectural historian Werner Durth will focus on the changes in building culture and the responsibility of architecture.
As of this year, Tegel Airport is a listed building. On this occasion, the Landesdenkmalamt Berlin and the Architektenkammer Berlin are hosting the event "Jung, aber Denkmal" at the Urania Berlin on Monday, October 21. Stephan Schütz, partner at gmp, will take part in a panel discussion on the monument's future.

On October 9, the project MIK e.V. and Verseidag invite you to a discussion with Volkwin Marg about Krefeld and architecture in the Krefeld Pavilion. The Pavillon is a walk-in sculpture by Thomas Schütte, winner of the Biennale Prize, and is a contribution to the nationwide anniversary event Bauhaus 100.
Stephan Schütz speaks at the International Library Summit in Venice on October 4th. The one-day conference is dedicated to the theme "Libraries and Their Architecture in the 21st Century".
At the opening of the exhibition " Stadt, Land, Fluss " on 12 September in Berlin, gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze will speak about the many years of cooperation with the architectural photographer HGEsch. Among the exhibited works are photographic documentations of numerous gmp projects.
On September 6, Christian Hellmund of gmp architects will speak at the lecture evening "Magdeburg - City of Modernism" (in german) about two striking buildings: the Stadthalle, built in 1927, and the Hyparschale by Ulrich Müther. He presents the planning for the renovation and extension of the Stadthalle as well as the planned construction measures on the Hyparschale in the immediate vicinity. Another speaker is the art historian Sabine Ullrich.
On 28 August, Stephan Schütz, Partner at gmp, will give a lecture on the theme of tradition and progress at the "JUNG Architecture Talks" event in Singapur.
On 21 August, Volkwin Marg will be a guest in the Theater Hall of the Alte Molkerei in Worpswede. He is one of five panelists in the discussion, "Concepts of contemporary building and urban planning" - with a focus on specific challenges in the near and long-term future.
On Tuesday, August 20, the DGNB e.V. and the Hamburg Chamber of Architects invite you to the event "Sustainable Building - Towards a New Normal" (in german). As one of the speakers, Urs Wedekind, Associate Director - DGBN Auditor at gmp, will present the German House in Ho Chi Minh City. The practical example shows how certification can help with the planning and construction of a sustainable house for the future.
The aac spring workshop was focused on the Japanische Palais—the last element in Dresden’s museum landscape that still requires refurbishment. Under the guidance of Meinhard von Gerkan and Stephan Schütz, the students developed designs that open the building towards Neustadt and the River Elbe, and convert the Japanische Palais into a “working collection” in which the general public is involved in the process of artistic creation. From August 15 the results will be shown in an exhibition in Dresden.
The 14th edition of the JUNG Architecture Talks in Freiburg on 11 July, 2019 is devoted to the topic "Modular + Serious". Bernd Gossmann, associate partner at gmp, is part of the panel and will talk about his experiences with the planning of a temporary school building in modular timber construction in Frankfurt's Westend.

On Thursday, 2 May 2019, the "DAM Preis 2019" exhibition by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum will open at the Zentrum für Baukultur Sachsen (ZfBK) in Dresden.
Stephan Schütz will be guest at the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin tomorrow evening. In a talk with Claudia Wessling, Head of Publications at MERICS, he shares experiences from 20 years of building in China.
