The architects practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) has – in a VOF negotiation procedure - been awarded the contract for the total refurbishment and modernization of the Mollier Building at Dresden Technical University.

The clinker brick building has been listed as a historic monument and accommodates a lecture hall, workshops, offices, laboratories and training areas, as well as storage and plant rooms and sanitary facilities of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The building, which dates from 1900, originally consisted of the two 2-story corner buildings linked via a single-story middle tract. For functional reasons, the middle tract was extended upwards by one floor with a double-pitched roof in the 1950s. The purpose of the refurbishment and modernization of the building is to replace this upper floor and improve the overall appearance, taking into account aspects of building preservation, while maintaining the current usable floor area.

The new design of the central roof over the northern wing of the Mollier Building and the associated facade will be based on the architectural style and materials of the period in which the Dresden Technical University campus was created.

The new roof structure will be reduced in height so that the roof above the central northern part of the building, in the form of a shallow, double-pitched roof, will be below the indented brick friezes of the corner buildings. The roofs of the corner buildings will have independent, shallow hipped roofs with a change of slope in the eaves area.
The facade will be designed with a series of abstracted pilasters, the intention being to create a dialogue with the existing building.

Construction is anticipated to take place between 2017 and 2020.
