On the occasion of this year’s Bauwelt Congress, gmp partner Stephan Schütz will be speaking at 10 am on 8 December about “Residential High-Rise Buildings in an Urban Context” and presenting international examples as alternative concepts to Berlin’s housing estates. These include gmp projects such as the four residential quarters Xinzhao in Beijing, the Fanes Tower in Cixi, a design for a typical residential building for Berlin or a new residential building in Berlin's Friedenstraße.
The topic of this contribution refers to current forecasts of population growth in Berlin, which lead to increased activity by private and urban developers in housing construction. At the same time, the typology of the high-rise building is gaining importance as a solution for the densification of existing and newly built districts. For the most part, monofunctional structures limited to housing are opposed to the idea of a mixed-use city. However, as a return to the parceled city with a small-scale mixed-use appears unrealistic due to changes in the real estate industry, an international view of alternative approaches is necessary.
