This Thursday sees the topping-out ceremony for the new A-Plus terminal area at Frankfurt Airport. The new facility expands the terminal areas used by Lufthansa, and was required regardless of the airport expansion program so as to accommodate large-capacity Airbus A380 and Boeing B747-8 aircraft.
Borgo Trento Hospital is of general importance for northern Italy. The new block now completed in the first phase has nine storeys overall, and is in the centre of the century-old hospital site.
The first phase of the refurbishment and enlargement of the state School of Ballet and Artistry is being inaugurated tomorrow. The present phase of construction took 30 months to complete, and comprises a new hall with ten dance rooms plus the refurbishment of the existing school building dating from the 1960s. Still to be completed (by the end of 2011) is a four-storey boarding school for 70 pupils on the same site.
The new opera house for the metropolis of Qingdao in Eastern China was opened yesterday. The design by architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Stephan Schütz with Nicolas Pomränke beat off rival bids from eleven international firms in 2004. Construction has taken just under five years.
Hanoi Museum, the new museum of Hanoi’s history, was inaugurated on Wednesday this week as part of the millennial celebrations at the Vietnamese capital. The ceremony took place in the presence of national and regional government representatives.

On 9th September, 16 months of construction work on the new extension to the town hall in Bielefeld was completed with a ceremony at which Mayor Pit Clausen gave a speech. With an area of 3,400m², the Events and Exhibition Hall can accommodate up to 5,000 visitors.

The ceremonial topping out ceremony of the terminal building as the heart of the new BBI airport for the German capital took place on 7th May. Berlin Brandenburg is (after Munich) the second completely new airport system in Germany to have take-off and landing runways operated completely separately from each other and passenger-handling midfield.
"The future of a residential high-rise?" – that is the title of this year's Bauwelt Congress. It will take place from 7 to 8 December in Berlin. gmp partner Stephan Schütz will also participate in the debate on the design of future high-rise buildings in urban spaces. In his lecture on 8 December at 10 am, Schütz will compare international examples with housing estates in Berlin.
The Heinze ArchitekTOUR Congress will be taking place in Berlin on 22 and 23 November. At the STATION Berlin, complemented by a product exhibition by leading manufacturers, a varied program of lectures will be presented, involving both industry experts and newcomers. The gmp founding partner Meinhard von Gerkan be participating as well; in his lecture on Thursday, 23 November, from 5 to 6 pm he will be presenting selected projects from his oeuvre.
From 8 to 10 November 2017, the trade fair FENESTRATION BAU China will take place in Shanghai. As the largest business platform in Asia, renowned exhibitors from all over the world will be presenting materials and services related to building again this year. The lecture series "Comparative Study on Architecture in China and Germany" is a solid element in the semester program at Tongji University in Shanghai. Volkwin Marg will highlight selected projects from his multi-faceted oeuvre.
The eighth edition of the Warsaw Architecture Conversations is defined by a three-pronged theme. On Friday, 13th October 2017, from 3 to 7 pm, the focus is on "Competition – Masterplan – Design Standards". Markus Pfisterer, Associate Partner at gmp, will be talking about the architectural competition and its specific variations using examples from the gmp portfolio.
Hamburg‘s „Freunde der Kunsthalle“ meet Volkwin Marg for an architect talk. On 26th September, from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, at Campus Rainvilleterrasse in Hamburg, the gmp founding partner will outline the history of the successful architects’ practice and will explain its concept of architecture through selected projects – his passion for stadium construction plays a major role.
The Porsche Center in Leipzig by gmp will serve as design example for exhibition buildings on the Architects’ and Planners’ Day 2017 at the ACO Academy on 21st September, organized by AIT-Dialog. Markus Pfisterer, associated partner at gmp, will be presenting the project in a lecture from 12 pm onwards. It is a contribution to the format “Best Practice in Dialogue”, which focuses on details of built structures.
According to current statistics, over 70 per cent of the building investments in Germany are made in refurbishment. Strategies for the further use of historically evolved built environments, including those of the post-war period, are high in demand. Kicking off the post-war modernism discussion, gmp partner Stephan Schütz will be presenting his keynote speech at Baukulturwerkstatt the refurbishment of the Kulturpalast in Dresden.
Six possible locations and a lot of ideas for footbridges are in the focus of the Berlin edition of the “International Footbridge Conference 2017”, from 6th until 8th September. Together with Hartwich / Mertens / Ingenieure, Markus Pfisterer, associated partner with gmp, will show a design for the city on the river Spree. Under the title “Straight in Moment. Moabit Link to Europa City”, the presentation on 7th September at 11 am will deal with a new traffic node within the area around the main station.
The City-Hof ensemble in Hamburg is about to be demolished – although it is a listed building. On Saturday, September 2nd, gmp founding partner Volkwin Marg speaks about his efforts to preserve the buildings. The lecture is part of the exhibition “credit exhibit” at the Brandshof in Hamburg
Little is known yet about the plans for the Überseequartier Süd in the Hamburg HafenCity. An information event and panel discussion on 17 July at 7 pm explains the developments of the large-scale project: On the podium, gmp founding partner Volkwin Marg will be discussing with the representatives of different disciplines in the context of HafenCity.
One look at Shanghai from two perspectives: In a studio discussion at BDA Galerie Hamburg on 27th June 2017, gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze illustrates together with the photographer Jan Siefke the development of the Chinese metropolis. While Jan Siefke has captured his impressions as long-time inhabitant, Nikolaus Goetze reports his extensive experience in designing urban space.
Throughout Germany the “22nd Tag der Architektur” takes place on 24th and 25th June. In Hamburg, too, historic as well as contemporary buildings can be explored. One of them is the new headquarter expansion for Gebr. Heinemann by gmp, which has been completed at the beginning of 2017. In three guided tours on 24th June, the architect in charge, Andreas Weihnacht, will explain the interaction of the structure with its surrounding in the HafenCity.
This year again, the German „22nd Tag der Architektur“ aims to give the exclusive opportunity to explore a large numbers of buildings. On this occasion, the Kulturpalast Dresden opens its doors on Saturday, 24th June. A lecture at 1.30 pm as well as two guided tours from 2 pm onwards give insights to people who are interested in architecture of the recently re-opened Kulturpalast, that has been refurbished by gmp.
Architecture as frame and stage for theater and venues – together with top-level theater consultants and operators, Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Dipl.-Ing. Architects Meinhard von Gerkan takes part in a panel discussion on the occasion of the International Stage Technology Conference on 22nd June 2017 from 11 am until 3 pm at the Berlin Palais am Funkturm.
In a lecture on 19th June 2017 at 6.30 pm, Wu Wei illustrates the multifaceted working scope and experiences of an architect. It will be held on China Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and concentrates on “The Artisan Spirit in the Architectural Works of gmp”. Three projects are taken as example for the holistic approach of gmp – from acquisition of the project to the final realization.
Perspectives on the eventful history of Hamburg’s HafenCity – this is the topic of the lecture by Prof. Dr.-Ing. h.c. Volkwin Marg on Thursday, 8th June 2017, at the Leuphana University Lüneburg. At 7 pm, the gmp founding partner will review the formation process of the new city quarter and will take this as specific example to illustrate the decisive elements of city planning.
Tall Buildings are the objective of the lecture by gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze on 7th June at 1 pm: With the title “Winning Experiences in China”, it illustrates current skyscraper projects of his office – amongst others gmp’s highest ever building which is going up in Nanjing Financial City II. The all-day event in Milan is organized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the IUAV University of Venice and the Politecnico Milan.
When building stadia and sports facilities, architects have to take into account many requirements. On the occasion of the World Stadium Congress 2017, Dipl.-Ing. Architect Markus Pfisterer, associated partner at gmp shows in this context several examples of the gmp-oeuvre such as the new arena of FC Krasnodar in Russia as well as the sports facilities in China. The lecture will be held on 23 May in the course of a three days event in Doha, Qatar.
“Building insteel as a circular added value" ist the subject of the event of the Business Club Luxembourg and ArcelorMittal: On this occasion, gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze will hold a lecture. On 18 May, in the Honorary Consulate of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, he examines the importance of steel as material used in architecture through examples of gmp projetcs. The event starts at 5.30 pm and is organized by IHK and the Chamber of Architects of Düsseldorf.
This year, the 22nd International Workshop on the Design and Practical Realisation of Architectural Membrane Structures deals with “Textile Roofs”. On this occasion, on 17 May at 12.25 pm Dipl.-Ing. Martin Glass (gmp architects) illustrates in his lecture with the title „World Cup Membrane Structures“ several gmp stadia projects and their specific roof structures. The three day workshop takes places at the Archenhold Observatory in Berlin.

In the course of the FSB lecture series on the issue of “sacral buildings”, the gmp founding partner Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Dipl.-Ing. The lecture takes place on Thursday, 11 Mai, from 7 pm onwards, at GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig. A selection of international gmp projects will be presented.
Public urban space and architecture are closely interrelated, especially in cultural buildings. Their architecture reflects not only the history and morphology of each place, but also the culture in its entire complexity. These dependencies and expressions are illustrated by means of more recent examples from China and Germany.
How can the development of sustainable habitats be promoted? The GRIHA Summit (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment), which will be held in New Delhi on March 2nd and 3rd, will address this issue. gmp-founding partner Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Meinhard von Gerkan will participate as key note speaker concerning the superodinated topic "Transforming Habitat”.

The "Global Design Sprint" will be held in Berlin on 18 January 2017. Nicolas Pomränke, Associate Partner at gmp, will also be taking part in this workshop organized by BuroHappold Engineering. In the context of the increasing importance of autonomous vehicles, industry experts are developing and discussing scenarios for three characteristic streets in the federal capital.
On the occasion of this year’s BAU in Munich trade fair, Kai Freitag, Head of IT at gmp, speaks about the methods of digital design, construction, and management. The lecture in german and english language takes part on Tuesday, 17th January 2017, from 1.45 pm to 3 pm, in Hall C2, Booth 309 and is a contribution to the topic of future building, for which “Building Information Modeling” (BIM) will be an indispensable tool.
