After a construction period of about two-and-a-half years, the new building of Kunsthalle Mannheim will be handed over to the city and its citizens on 18 December 2017. The design by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) is for one of the currently largest museum buildings in Germany which, with its unmistakable appearance, confidently stands amongst the neighboring buildings.
In the Heidestrasse precinct within the new Europacity district near Berlin’s central station, mixed-use areas MI 1 and 2 will be built by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The two city blocks frame Nordhafenplatz, the square at Nordhafen (north harbor) that will form the urban center of the emerging neighborhood.
The school building of the new Cultural and Educational Centre in Alsdorf has been completed to designs by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The building consists of two mirrored horseshoe-shaped tracts, and combines a grammar school and a secondary school under one roof.
Rostock will soon have a new entrance to the city, built according to a design by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). After having selected three submissions to the open international competition “Stadteingang Slüterstraße” for further development, gmp has now been officially commissioned.
The new building for the extension of Gyula-Trebitsch school to the design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) has been completed. During a festive ceremony, the building was officially handed over to Hamburg’s school senator, Ties Rabe, on 14 September; this means that, after the architects had won the competition in 2014, they were able to complete the project earlier than originally planned and within budget.
This year’s autumn workshop of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) was led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. h. c. Volkwin Marg and Dipl.-Ing. Hubert Nienhoff. From September 4th to 29th, scholarship students addressed ways to integrate the grounds of Iran’s first airport, the former Ghale Morghi military airport, into the urban life of the capital city of Tehran.
The new office tower of the HNA Group designed by the architects’ practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) occupies a prominent position and – via a glazed joint in the building – provides views from inside out and outside in, with a terraced water landscape continuing the theme on the outside. Located at the banks of the Huangpu River, the new office tower of the Chinese HNA Group, which focuses mainly on air traffic and tourism, provides a fantastic view.

the title „Tehran Garden City: Designs for a New Civic Center - Shaping Public Life on the City‘s Former Airport
Area“, the participants are working out drafts for the conversion of Iran‘s first airport in its capital Tehran.
The design by gmp architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners with Patrik Dierks Architects has won the private consultants’ competition for the redesign of Hörnum harbor. The cooperation between the architects is based on a long-standing friendly connection, and brings together competence in design and subject-specific experience. Their winning contribution is based on retaining and optimizing the existing commercial functions of the harbor at the southern point of the German island Sylt, and on expanding these with new areas for tourism, retail, and gastronomy.
Once again, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have designed characteristic facades for several production halls in the newly-founded city of Lingang near Shanghai. In doing so, the practice has demonstrated that, in future, industrial buildings in China will not be reduced to purely cost-optimized and utilitarian buildings.
In 2015, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) were able to win the competition for the construction of the China UnionPay Tower in Shanghai. Now the practice has been commissioned to design the 150 meter high building which, with its vertically structured glass facade, opens up to the surroundings and offers an impressive view across the former Expo area and the banks of the Huangpu River.
Behind the hoarding at Alter Wall 2–32, between Hamburg’s Town Hall and Alsterfleet, behind the Bucerius Kunst Forum, all that was left standing was the 150 m long historic facade, propped up by a steel structure. To date, work on the renewal of the entire block has progressed well – the shell construction with all floor levels has been completed, and the facade props along Alter Wall are being removed. On 14 July, the topping out ceremony for the new ensemble in the heart of the Hanseatic City took place.
In 2010, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) won the international competition for the new construction of an office complex in the Chinese provincial capital city. The building, with its facade of distinct squares, has now been completed.
In Beijing, gmp · Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners have completed the Huawei Technological Factory Buildings. Following the previous projects in Shenzhen and Chengdu, this is now the third research and development center for the Chinese telecommunications corporation completed to a design by gmp.
The new municipal sports and leisure pool, “blu”, in Potsdam has been completed to a design by gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. The opening ceremony took place on 6 June and regular operation starts today.
What could a natural history museum of the 21st century look like? The special exhibition of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) in the Zoological Museum, Hamburg, provides some answers. In the context of the Evolutioneum workshop, scholarship students of the aac have produced designs in two parts, which are on display at the Zoological Museum, Hamburg, until 27 August.
The 28th of April is the big day – the new concert hall in the Kulturpalast in Dresden will be ceremonially opened with a festive program. On the day after, the rooms of the other main functions of the Kulturpalast, i.e. the new central library and the “Herkuleskeule” cabaret venue, will be inaugurated. The refurbishment of the existing part of the building, which is listed as a historic monument, and the new building of the concert hall, have been completed to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp)
With a height of 411 meters, the building comes under the high-rise building category of the “super-high skyscrapers” of the CTBUH, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. This means that the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) are putting up their highest building ever on the third plot.
Following the designs for the „Evolutioneum“, a natural history museum for Hamburg, and the new Altona railway station at the location of the Diebsteich metropolitan railway station, the Academy for Architectural Culture has now presented five designs for German port museum, Hamburg. The five different designs are the result of the aac’s international spring workshop, which was led by Professor Volkwin Marg and Nikolaus Goetze.
The „Jiaming Maple Park“ ensemble in Beijing has been completed to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The practice had been commissioned with the project by the client, Jiaming Investment. The new office ensemble, which has achieved LEED Platinum certification, comprises three compact volumes. The functional layout is based on a sustainable concept with flexibly divisible office zones that can be operated independently.

The winning entry for the conversion and extension of the educational center is respectful of the traditional ensemble in this prominent position. The Japanese corporation Olympus is planning a corporate center in the Hamburg district of Hammerbrook for the economic zone in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (gmp) were successful in winning the bidding process for the design of the new office building with medical engineering faculty in the City Süd neighborhood, and was commissioned with the project.
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) and the engineers schlaich bergermann partner (sbp) have won the international ideas competition for a roof over Verona’s historic arena. The jointly developed design was the winning entry of over 80 competing submissions, and continues the many years of cooperation between the two practices. A new trade exhibition and congress center has been completed in Lianyungang, China to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The project was subject to an international competition, which was won by gmp. Situated in an urban development area between the city and the sea, the four large exhibition halls surround the congress area in the center of the building.
The extension to the head office of the Gebr. Heinemann trading firm in Hamburg’s HafenCity has been completed to a design by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). gmp had won the competition in 2013 and, one year later, started with the construction of the office complex in Hamburg’s Elbquartier; the development blends well with its surroundings in terms of aesthetics and shape.
On Wednesday, 24 October, gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze will give a lecture on mobility as part of the Master in Design Engineering program, a collaborative degree program between the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
In the winter semester 2018/2019 Nikolaus Goetze will take over the "Li Dehua & Luo Xiaowei Guest Professorship" as the Chair of Architectural Design at Tongji University in Shanghai. In his inaugural lecture on 10 October, he dealt with how museums can be designed in the future.

The sixth edition of DETAIL's lecture series, "The Future of Building", on 20 September in Munich will focus on modular building. In his lecture at the symposium, Dipl.-Ing architect Christian Hellmund, Director at gmp, will talk about the Gasteig Interim, for which gmp has recently been awarded the contract.
On 13. September, Sara Taberner Bonastre (gmp) will be part of at the VII. Latin American Symposium on Tensile Architecture in the capital of Peru. Her presentation will showcase relevant projects from the gmp portfolio.

The project Deutsches Haus by gmp in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City is the first DGNB-certified building in Vietnam. In a lecture by gmp partner Nikolaus Geotze next Saturday and a photo exhibition during the Vietnam Energy Efficiency Building Week 2018 taking place from 25 August to 1 September at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi, visitors can learn more about the building.
Under the headline "Building Bridges - Brücken bauen ", experts from all over the world will meet from 26 to 28 June for the International Baukultur Days 2018 in Venice. Markus Pfisterer, Associate Partner at gmp, will be presenting bridge constructions from the gmp portfolio in a Pecha Kucha format as part of closing panel on 27 June.
The recently reopened Kunsthalle Mannheim considers itself as a "museum in motion". The new building is conceived as a 'city in the city'. On the occasion of the synposium "The Museum of the Future", gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze will be giving a tour of the house on 21 June, explaining the architecture, together with the team of the Kunsthalle Mannheim.
On 14 June, Nicolas Pomränke, associate partner of gmp, will be part of the "Architecture and Acoustics" conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. His contribution focuses on the relationship between architectural appearance and the acoustic demands of a building based on the examples of the Kulturpalast Dresden, Neues Tempodrom Berlin and Qingdao Grand Theater (China).
SOHO Fuxing Plaza (Shanghai, China) by gmp was announced recently by CTBUH as a Finalist project for the Tall + Urban Innovation Conference Awards, in the category of Urban Habitat. In recognition thereof, the Industrieclub Sachsen has invited the gmp founding partner Meinhard von Gerkan to give a lecture on 24th April providing a look behind the scenes of this architectural project as well as the philosophy that has shaped his work since the beginning.
Smart Cities, innovative forms of mobility and the challenges of city planning in the future – these are the topics of the third edition of IGSI UrbanLab from 23 to 27 April in Berlin, which has extended an invitation to international experts. Once again, gmp is part of this conference, which provides a knowledge transfer and networking opportunities, especially between Germany and India.
In a lecture on 3 April at “The 14th International Conference on Green and Energy-Efficient Building & New Technologies and Products Expo”, Wu Wei talks about Architecture and Sustainability. A number of projects are taken as example for the approach of gmp relating to the subject matter.
On Friday, (30 March) the NDR will be broadcasting a new episode of “Nordtour”, including a feature with Volkwin Marg. Theme of the program is “Zurück in die 80er in Hamburg”.

What does a good school building have to fulfill? The participants of the architects‘ slam will be asked about this question on 7 February as part of the trade fair SCHULBAU 2018 at the Hamburg Cruise Center Altona. The gmp architect Robert Friedrichs will illustrate his recent experience in the planning of a new building for the Gyula Trebitsch School in Hamburg-Tonndorf.
The term "Baukultur" (building culture) becomes the central concept of the discussion: On 1 February, starting at 6.30 pm, at the 13th edition of the JUNG Architekturgespräche in Munich, well-known speakers from the architecture scene will focus on the question of creating a livable environment. In the last two decades a number of industrial architecture projects have been realized by gmp in China. They all are creating a whole new character for landscapes and urban areas. With the title “Industrial Buildings in an Urban Context”, a new publication impressively illustrates this approach. The book launch on 26 January in Shanghai is accompanied by an exhibition, featuring the esthetics and functional design in architecture and fashion.
As part of a lecture at the NORDAKADEMIE, Hochschule der Wirtschaft in Elmshorn, Volkwin Marg will speak about the "Choreography of the Masses" on 25 January, starting at 5.30 pm. A review on Berlin after the fall of the wall: On 24 January at 8 pm, the Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin presents Hubert Siegert’s documentary film “Berlin Babylon” as a digital premiere. Following the screening, Siegert will host a discussion with the film’s protagonists, and dominant players in Berlin’s urban redevelopment Meinhard von Gerkan and Hans Stimmann.
Nikolaus Goetze will illuminate contemporary architecture in Vietnam in the mirror of tradition and present on 24 January 2018. The lecture by gmp partner and manager of the offices Hamburg-Elbchaussee, Shanghai and Hanoi is part of a guest lecture for the Institute for Industrial Construction and Constructive Design of the Technical University Braunschweig, and will take place in the Architekturpavillon.
The KAP Forum in Cologne dedicates an "evening about architecture and life" to Volkwin Marg. On 23 January, at 7 pm, the gmp founding partner will speak about his multifaceted oeuvre. Andreas Grosz, curator and director of the KAP Forum, and the journalist Dr. Oliver Herwig will pose the question, which milestones have played a special role in Volkwin Marg’s work. The event is already fully booked.
The Roundtable of the Urban Land Institute Switzerland on 16 January at the Zurich airport focuses on the development of AiportCities. Hans-Joachim Paap, associate partner at gmp, will be explaining in this context the challenges of large-scale projects. Using the example of the airport BER project, of which he was in charge for many years, he will be giving insights into the processes behind the scenes.
The Hamburger Denkmalverein extended an invitation for a discovery tour through the Hanseviertel, Hamburg’s first shopping passage entirely made of brick. The response has been great: The two guided tours on 12th January, followed by a lecture by Volkwin Marg, are fully booked. There, the gmp founding partner and architect of the Hanseviertel will be providing insights into its design history.
"The future of a residential high-rise?" – that is the title of this year's Bauwelt Congress. It will take place from 7 to 8 December in Berlin. gmp partner Stephan Schütz will also participate in the debate on the design of future high-rise buildings in urban spaces. In his lecture on 8 December at 10 am, Schütz will compare international examples with housing estates in Berlin.
The Heinze ArchitekTOUR Congress will be taking place in Berlin on 22 and 23 November. At the STATION Berlin, complemented by a product exhibition by leading manufacturers, a varied program of lectures will be presented, involving both industry experts and newcomers. The gmp founding partner Meinhard von Gerkan be participating as well; in his lecture on Thursday, 23 November, from 5 to 6 pm he will be presenting selected projects from his oeuvre.
From 8 to 10 November 2017, the trade fair FENESTRATION BAU China will take place in Shanghai. As the largest business platform in Asia, renowned exhibitors from all over the world will be presenting materials and services related to building again this year. The program is supplemented by numerous lectures. Within this framework, gmp partner Stephan Schütz will also be talking about "Flowing Spaces" by showing three gmp projects.
Design, culture and art are major topics in the Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou – and they also have an influence on the urban development. It will be discussed at the first edition of the “Guangzhou International Design Forum” from 9 to 10 November 2017: In addition to other international guests, gmp founding partner Meinhard von Gerkan is invited to hold a lecture.
The lecture series "Comparative Study on Architecture in China and Germany" is a solid element in the semester program at Tongji University in Shanghai. In this context, gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze will be reporting on his architectural experience as guest speaker on 8 November, focusing on the opportunities for the future of large cities.
Facades, technology and sustainable construction will be the main topic of this year's edition of the architectureworld trade fair on the 8th and 9th of November 2017 in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. The accompanying congress will be showing forward-looking works from architecture and urban development. In a lecture, gmp founding partner Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volkwin Marg will highlight selected projects from his multi-faceted oeuvre.
The eighth edition of the Warsaw Architecture Conversations is defined by a three-pronged theme. On Friday, 13th October 2017, from 3 to 7 pm, the focus is on "Competition – Masterplan – Design Standards". Markus Pfisterer, Associate Partner at gmp, will be talking about the architectural competition and its specific variations using examples from the gmp portfolio.
Hamburg‘s „Freunde der Kunsthalle“ meet Volkwin Marg for an architect talk. On 26th September, from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, at Campus Rainvilleterrasse in Hamburg, the gmp founding partner will outline the history of the successful architects’ practice and will explain its concept of architecture through selected projects – his passion for stadium construction plays a major role.
The Porsche Center in Leipzig by gmp will serve as design example for exhibition buildings on the Architects’ and Planners’ Day 2017 at the ACO Academy on 21st September, organized by AIT-Dialog. Markus Pfisterer, associated partner at gmp, will be presenting the project in a lecture from 12 pm onwards. It is a contribution to the format “Best Practice in Dialogue”, which focuses on details of built structures.
According to current statistics, over 70 per cent of the building investments in Germany are made in refurbishment. Strategies for the further use of historically evolved built environments, including those of the post-war period, are high in demand. Kicking off the post-war modernism discussion, gmp partner Stephan Schütz will be presenting his keynote speech at Baukulturwerkstatt the refurbishment of the Kulturpalast in Dresden.
Six possible locations and a lot of ideas for footbridges are in the focus of the Berlin edition of the “International Footbridge Conference 2017”, from 6th until 8th September. Together with Hartwich / Mertens / Ingenieure, Markus Pfisterer, associated partner with gmp, will show a design for the city on the river Spree. Under the title “Straight in Moment. Moabit Link to Europa City”, the presentation on 7th September at 11 am will deal with a new traffic node within the area around the main station.
The City-Hof ensemble in Hamburg is about to be demolished – although it is a listed building. On Saturday, September 2nd, gmp founding partner Volkwin Marg speaks about his efforts to preserve the buildings. The lecture is part of the exhibition “credit exhibit” at the Brandshof in Hamburg
Little is known yet about the plans for the Überseequartier Süd in the Hamburg HafenCity. An information event and panel discussion on 17 July at 7 pm explains the developments of the large-scale project: On the podium, gmp founding partner Volkwin Marg will be discussing with the representatives of different disciplines in the context of HafenCity.
One look at Shanghai from two perspectives: In a studio discussion at BDA Galerie Hamburg on 27th June 2017, gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze illustrates together with the photographer Jan Siefke the development of the Chinese metropolis. While Jan Siefke has captured his impressions as long-time inhabitant, Nikolaus Goetze reports his extensive experience in designing urban space.
Throughout Germany the “22nd Tag der Architektur” takes place on 24th and 25th June. In Hamburg, too, historic as well as contemporary buildings can be explored. One of them is the new headquarter expansion for Gebr. Heinemann by gmp, which has been completed at the beginning of 2017. In three guided tours on 24th June, the architect in charge, Andreas Weihnacht, will explain the interaction of the structure with its surrounding in the HafenCity.
This year again, the German „22nd Tag der Architektur“ aims to give the exclusive opportunity to explore a large numbers of buildings. On this occasion, the Kulturpalast Dresden opens its doors on Saturday, 24th June. A lecture at 1.30 pm as well as two guided tours from 2 pm onwards give insights to people who are interested in architecture of the recently re-opened Kulturpalast, that has been refurbished by gmp.
Architecture as frame and stage for theater and venues – together with top-level theater consultants and operators, Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Dipl.-Ing. Architects Meinhard von Gerkan takes part in a panel discussion on the occasion of the International Stage Technology Conference on 22nd June 2017 from 11 am until 3 pm at the Berlin Palais am Funkturm.
In a lecture on 19th June 2017 at 6.30 pm, Wu Wei illustrates the multifaceted working scope and experiences of an architect. It will be held on China Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and concentrates on “The Artisan Spirit in the Architectural Works of gmp”. Three projects are taken as example for the holistic approach of gmp – from acquisition of the project to the final realization.
