After a construction period of about two-and-a-half years, the new building of Kunsthalle Mannheim will be handed over to the city and its citizens on 18 December 2017. The design by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) is for one of the currently largest museum buildings in Germany which, with its unmistakable appearance, confidently stands amongst the neighboring buildings.
In the Heidestrasse precinct within the new Europacity district near Berlin’s central station, mixed-use areas MI 1 and 2 will be built by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The two city blocks frame Nordhafenplatz, the square at Nordhafen (north harbor) that will form the urban center of the emerging neighborhood.
The school building of the new Cultural and Educational Centre in Alsdorf has been completed to designs by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The building consists of two mirrored horseshoe-shaped tracts, and combines a grammar school and a secondary school under one roof.

The new building for the extension of Gyula-Trebitsch school to the design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) has been completed. During a festive ceremony, the building was officially handed over to Hamburg’s school senator, Ties Rabe, on 14 September; this means that, after the architects had won the competition in 2014, they were able to complete the project earlier than originally planned and within budget.
This year’s autumn workshop of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) was led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. h. c. Volkwin Marg and Dipl.-Ing. Hubert Nienhoff. From September 4th to 29th, scholarship students addressed ways to integrate the grounds of Iran’s first airport, the former Ghale Morghi military airport, into the urban life of the capital city of Tehran.
The new office tower of the HNA Group designed by the architects’ practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) occupies a prominent position and – via a glazed joint in the building – provides views from inside out and outside in, with a terraced water landscape continuing the theme on the outside. Located at the banks of the Huangpu River, the new office tower of the Chinese HNA Group, which focuses mainly on air traffic and tourism, provides a fantastic view.

Area“, the participants are working out drafts for the conversion of Iran‘s first airport in its capital Tehran.
The design by gmp architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners with Patrik Dierks Architects has won the private consultants’ competition for the redesign of Hörnum harbor. The cooperation between the architects is based on a long-standing friendly connection, and brings together competence in design and subject-specific experience. Their winning contribution is based on retaining and optimizing the existing commercial functions of the harbor at the southern point of the German island Sylt, and on expanding these with new areas for tourism, retail, and gastronomy.
Once again, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have designed characteristic facades for several production halls in the newly-founded city of Lingang near Shanghai. In doing so, the practice has demonstrated that, in future, industrial buildings in China will not be reduced to purely cost-optimized and utilitarian buildings.
In 2015, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) were able to win the competition for the construction of the China UnionPay Tower in Shanghai. Now the practice has been commissioned to design the 150 meter high building which, with its vertically structured glass facade, opens up to the surroundings and offers an impressive view across the former Expo area and the banks of the Huangpu River.
Behind the hoarding at Alter Wall 2–32, between Hamburg’s Town Hall and Alsterfleet, behind the Bucerius Kunst Forum, all that was left standing was the 150 m long historic facade, propped up by a steel structure. To date, work on the renewal of the entire block has progressed well – the shell construction with all floor levels has been completed, and the facade props along Alter Wall are being removed. On 14 July, the topping out ceremony for the new ensemble in the heart of the Hanseatic City took place.
In 2010, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) won the international competition for the new construction of an office complex in the Chinese provincial capital city. The building, with its facade of distinct squares, has now been completed.
In Beijing, gmp · Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners have completed the Huawei Technological Factory Buildings. Following the previous projects in Shenzhen and Chengdu, this is now the third research and development center for the Chinese telecommunications corporation completed to a design by gmp.
The new municipal sports and leisure pool, “blu”, in Potsdam has been completed to a design by gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. The opening ceremony took place on 6 June and regular operation starts today.
What could a natural history museum of the 21st century look like? The special exhibition of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) in the Zoological Museum, Hamburg, provides some answers. In the context of the Evolutioneum workshop, scholarship students of the aac have produced designs in two parts, which are on display at the Zoological Museum, Hamburg, until 27 August.
The 28th of April is the big day – the new concert hall in the Kulturpalast in Dresden will be ceremonially opened with a festive program. On the day after, the rooms of the other main functions of the Kulturpalast, i.e. the new central library and the “Herkuleskeule” cabaret venue, will be inaugurated. The refurbishment of the existing part of the building, which is listed as a historic monument, and the new building of the concert hall, have been completed to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp)
With a height of 411 meters, the building comes under the high-rise building category of the “super-high skyscrapers” of the CTBUH, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. This means that the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) are putting up their highest building ever on the third plot.
Following the designs for the „Evolutioneum“, a natural history museum for Hamburg, and the new Altona railway station at the location of the Diebsteich metropolitan railway station, the Academy for Architectural Culture has now presented five designs for German port museum, Hamburg. The five different designs are the result of the aac’s international spring workshop, which was led by Professor Volkwin Marg and Nikolaus Goetze.
The „Jiaming Maple Park“ ensemble in Beijing has been completed to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The practice had been commissioned with the project by the client, Jiaming Investment. The new office ensemble, which has achieved LEED Platinum certification, comprises three compact volumes. The functional layout is based on a sustainable concept with flexibly divisible office zones that can be operated independently.

The winning entry for the conversion and extension of the educational center is respectful of the traditional ensemble in this prominent position. The architecture nevertheless makes a confident contemporary mark, and creates new high-quality spaces and interiors, benefiting the surroundings.
The Japanese corporation Olympus is planning a corporate center in the Hamburg district of Hammerbrook for the economic zone in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (gmp) were successful in winning the bidding process for the design of the new office building with medical engineering faculty in the City Süd neighborhood, and was commissioned with the project.

The jointly developed design was the winning entry of over 80 competing submissions, and continues the many years of cooperation between the two practices. A new trade exhibition and congress center has been completed in Lianyungang, China to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The project was subject to an international competition, which was won by gmp. Situated in an urban development area between the city and the sea, the four large exhibition halls surround the congress area in the center of the building.
The extension to the head office of the Gebr. Heinemann trading firm in Hamburg’s HafenCity has been completed to a design by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). gmp had won the competition in 2013 and, one year later, started with the construction of the office complex in Hamburg’s Elbquartier; the development blends well with its surroundings in terms of aesthetics and shape.
gmp director Johann von Mansberg presents current examples of certified architecture in Germany. Art spaces as a mirror of changes in society – this is the subject of a lecture by Dipl.-Ing. architect Nikolaus Goetze at Tongji University in Shanghai. On 16 November 2016, the gmp Partner and Head of the offices in Hamburg, Shanghai, and Hanoi will talk on selected cultural and museum projects from gmp’s wide range of buildings.

Mit System nach oben“(With a system to the top) – that is the theme of the upcoming symposium about urban housing construction at The Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory at Berlin. On 4 November will be lectures and discussions with representatives of renowned architect- and engineering offices. gmp-partner Stephan Schütz explains how a high-rise project is created from the start. Together with Aedes, the housing association WBM organizes the event. The entry is free, but all lectures are held in German only.
Stephan Schütz will hold a lecture at the "Design for Qingdao - International Coastal Cities and Architecture Summit Forum". The conference venue will be the Grand Theater Qingdao, which is also the object of the lecture among all buildings and projects of gmp in the city.
In her lecture on 31 October 2016, Dipl.-Ing. Magdalene Weiß will focus on innovative urban design using Hamburg’s HafenCity as an example; in the context of the "World Cities Day – Shanghai Forum 2016" in China, the architect, who is an Associate Partner at gmp, will talk about the development of the growing metropolis in northern Germany, particularly under the aspects of social, spatial, and cultural change.
What functions does a contemporary museum have to fulfill? How are these reflected in the architecture? Dipl.-Ing. Architect Nikolaus Goetze, Partner at gmp and Head of the Hamburg, Shanghai, and Hanoi offices, discusses these questions using the example of the new Kunsthalle Mannheim. The public lecture takes place on 27 September from 11:45 to 12:15 at the Bauhaus-Archiv/ Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin. This lecture is given in the context of the conference entitled “Even more museum?!” in preparation for the 100-year anniversary of the Bauhaus.
