Since 4 December 2014, Meinhard von Gerkan has been Consulting Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the renowned Tongji University in Shanghai. He was handed his certificate of appointment by Prof. Zheng Shiling, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the presence of representatives of the Faculty and numerous students.
The Gyula Trebitsch school at Hamburg will be extended and the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been commissioned to build the extended replacement building to their designs. This was the result of the design commission negotiated under VOF (German procedure for commissioning freelance services) following the competition win.
With the completion of the transport and landscaped areas, the conversion and extension of the workshops for the scenery and costumes of the Städtische Bühnen were completed on time for the new 2014/2015 season.
Meinhard von Gerkan has been honoured in China with a guest professorship at the well-established Southeast University of Nanjing. The award was presented to him by Wang Jianguo, Dean of the Architecture Faculty at the university, which was founded in 1902, during the opening of the exhibition entitled “Designing in Dialogue. The Architecture of von Gerkan, Marg and Partners”.
Yesterday, at the awards ceremony of the Iconic Awards 2014 in Munich, the Qingdao Grand Theatre and the Berlin State Ballet School were awarded Best of Best and Winner respectively in the Architecture category.

After a construction period of almost two years, Trianel GmbH this summer moved into its company headquarters in Aachen, which had been designed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners. The utility company now has over 300 employees in the new building who previously were spread out over three locations in Aachen. The office block has a floor area of 6,300 square metres and can accommodate up to 430 members of staff.

The name Brooklyn Rapid Transit Powerhouse refers to a large coal-fired power station built at the end of the 19th century to generate electricity for Brooklyn’s streetcar system. Built as a steel skeleton construction typical of the time with a representative façade composed of red-brown brick, the building is situated on an extensive site along the branching Gowanus Canal, which until decommissioning was the supply route for the power plant’s coal and water.

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) are designing the new rehearsal building for the ballet company of Deutsche Oper am Rhein. In a consortium with HOCHTIEF Solutions, they were commissioned by Düsseldorf City Council in a PPP scheme. The new ballet building will be created on the historic site of the former Rheinbahn depot “am Steinberg” in Düsseldorf, between the listed tramway depot and the back of the housing development at Kopernikusstrasse.
The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been successful in winning the competition for three office towers near the southern railway station in Shanghai, and have been commissioned with the design of the project. Vanke Co., Ltd. is one of the largest real estate companies for housing in China and wants to extend its range of activities into the office building sector; for this purpose, the company has selected a site in a desirable up-and-coming business area.
In the southern Chinese city of Dongguan – a city of several million – a basketball stadium has been completed to plans by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). The building can be seen from afar and is a landmark that provides identity and orientation to the people in the new district of Liaobu. The stadium has space for nearly 15,000 visitors and can be used for sports and other events; it is the new main competition venue for one of the most successful Chinese basketball teams, the Dongguan Leopards.
At Tesdorpfstrasse 8 in Hamburg, near the Dammtor railway station, a new office building has been completed to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) which meets top energy conservation standards and is likely to receive the gold certificate under DGNB rules.
Five books on the work, views and approaches of the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been published in recent months. The œuvre of the practice is very diverse, and similarly the authors approach their subjects – which couldn’t be more varied - in very different ways: from building in a historic context via the design and construction of Chinese cultural venues through to a view behind the curtain of large German construction sites, the books illustrate examples of gmp’s work in text and images.
The design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, with JB Ferrari, for a new children’s hospital at the Lausanne University Hospital has won first prize in an international competition. The hospital is to provide 85 beds and an accident and emergency unit for children, and is provisionally scheduled to open in 2019. The design concept includes light-flooded open areas with much greenery, which are intended to make a hospital stay as agreeable as possible for patients and their relatives. Today, the entry will be presented to the public in Lausanne.
A new football stadium for Tripoli: the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Stadium in the new sports park, which was designed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) took place on Wednesday 26 February 2014. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Libyan Prime Minister, Ali Seidan, the German Ambassador, Christian Much, the football legend Franz Beckenbauer and the gmp Project Manager, Hans-Joachim Paap. gmp has been commissioned with the scheme design for the project as well as the detailed design.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new construction of the German Service Centre in Foshan, a city in the south of China, will take place on 25 February 2014. In 2013, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners were successful in winning this competition which was open to German architectural practices with a Chinese partner.

On Wednesday, 24 October, gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze will give a lecture on mobility as part of the Master in Design Engineering program, a collaborative degree program between the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Harvard John A. In the winter semester 2018/2019 Nikolaus Goetze will take over the "Li Dehua & Luo Xiaowei Guest Professorship" as the Chair of Architectural Design at Tongji University in Shanghai. In his inaugural lecture on 10 October, he dealt with how museums can be designed in the future.

The recently reopened Kunsthalle Mannheim considers itself as a "museum in motion". The new building is conceived as a 'city in the city'. On the occasion of the synposium "The Museum of the Future", gmp partner Nikolaus Goetze will be giving a tour of the house on 21 June, explaining the architecture, together with the team of the Kunsthalle Mannheim.
On 14 June, Nicolas Pomränke, associate partner of gmp, will be part of the "Architecture and Acoustics" conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. Smart Cities, innovative forms of mobility and the challenges of city planning in the future – these are the topics of the third edition of IGSI UrbanLab from 23 to 27 April in Berlin, which has extended an invitation to international experts. Once again, gmp is part of this conference, which provides a knowledge transfer and networking opportunities, especially between Germany and India.
In a lecture on 3 April at “The 14th International Conference on Green and Energy-Efficient Building & New Technologies and Products Expo”, Wu Wei talks about Architecture and Sustainability. A number of projects are taken as example for the approach of gmp relating to the subject matter.

What does a good school building have to fulfill? The participants of the architects‘ slam will be asked about this question on 7 February as part of the trade fair SCHULBAU 2018 at the Hamburg Cruise Center Altona. The gmp architect Robert Friedrichs will illustrate his recent experience in the planning of a new building for the Gyula Trebitsch School in Hamburg-Tonndorf.
The term "Baukultur" (building culture) becomes the central concept of the discussion: On 1 February, starting at 6.30 pm, at the 13th edition of the JUNG Architekturgespräche in Munich, well-known speakers from the architecture scene will focus on the question of creating a livable environment. Among them is also Stephan Schütz, partner at gmp. A subsequent get-together invites you to a professional exchange.
In the last two decades a number of industrial architecture projects have been realized by gmp in China. They all are creating a whole new character for landscapes and urban areas. With the title “Industrial Buildings in an Urban Context”, a new publication impressively illustrates this approach. The book launch on 26 January in Shanghai is accompanied by an exhibition, featuring the esthetics and functional design in architecture and fashion.
As part of a lecture at the NORDAKADEMIE, Hochschule der Wirtschaft in Elmshorn, Volkwin Marg will speak about the "Choreography of the Masses" on 25 January, starting at 5.30 pm. Thus, the gmp founding partner and architect of significant, international stadiums reflects on these from the fields of politics and business.
A review on Berlin after the fall of the wall: On 24 January at 8 pm, the Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin presents Hubert Siegert’s documentary film “Berlin Babylon” as a digital premiere. Following the screening, Siegert will host a discussion with the film’s protagonists, and dominant players in Berlin’s urban redevelopment Meinhard von Gerkan and Hans Stimmann.
Nikolaus Goetze will illuminate contemporary architecture in Vietnam in the mirror of tradition and present on 24 January 2018. The lecture by gmp partner and manager of the offices Hamburg-Elbchaussee, Shanghai and Hanoi is part of a guest lecture for the Institute for Industrial Construction and Constructive Design of the Technical University Braunschweig, and will take place in the Architekturpavillon.
The KAP Forum in Cologne dedicates an "evening about architecture and life" to Volkwin Marg. On 23 January, at 7 pm, the gmp founding partner will speak about his multifaceted oeuvre. Andreas Grosz, curator and director of the KAP Forum, and the journalist Dr. Oliver Herwig will pose the question, which milestones have played a special role in Volkwin Marg’s work. The Roundtable of the Urban Land Institute Switzerland on 16 January at the Zurich airport focuses on the development of AiportCities. Hans-Joachim Paap, associate partner at gmp, will be explaining in this context the challenges of large-scale projects. Using the example of the airport BER project, of which he was in charge for many years, he will be giving insights into the processes behind the scenes.
The Hamburger Denkmalverein extended an invitation for a discovery tour through the Hanseviertel, Hamburg’s first shopping passage entirely made of brick. The response has been great: The two guided tours on 12th January, followed by a lecture by Volkwin Marg, are fully booked.
