Before the “Designing in Dialogue” travelling exhibition arrived in Nanjing, it had already been shown at the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, in Vietnam, Brazil and Chile. With this exhibition gmp architects provide an overview of their oeuvre: sketches and drawings convey the conceptual approach, models illustrate the designs in their three-dimensional form and photos and films document the completed buildings.

Building on old foundations: Is there a better place than Venice to stage an exhibition on this subject? Is there any other place that depends to the same degree on its foundations, the millions of oak piles on which the city is founded – or a place similarly at risk? Venice is the epitome of a city which engages with its own architectural past.

1914–2014: the period of world history which the 2014 Architecture Biennale revolves around is the century in which the modern world has come about, a technological and globalised world. A central element in this development: the dream of flying has become a reality, for everybody.

Often these are unusual questions, sometimes simple, and frequently they seem to want to combine what cannot be combined.
