The basic idea of the extension to the small fair centre in Tuscany – developed piecemeal over the years – was to add a symmetrically constructed counterpart to the large existing Hall 1.
This addition with an upgraded south entrance and new entrances in the west and east means three events can be staged simultaneously, and there is, for the first time, continuous site concentricity. The whole site is enclosed within a unifying colonnade and surrounded by a lavishly landscaped parking facility with room for about 1,000 vehicles.
The new west and east entrances are defined by two small six-storey administrative blocks that house the chamber of commerce and the provincial administration.
The existing dark halls were extended with the addition of Halls 5 and 6. The higher-quality Hall 7 was designed as a multi-function hall, and Hall 8 as a conference hall. Subsequent design work was done to make the conference hall also available as an auditorium for concerts.
The same materials were used on the new facades as on the existing halls. The heterogeneous existing buildings and the new buildings were carried out in a uniform silvery corrugated metal and bound together by the anthracite-coloured colonnades. The two six-storey administrative buildings are likewise dark. The post-and-beam structure is articulated by horizontal shades that project 2.5m.
In contrast to the cool colours and materials of the facades and entrance areas, the multifunction hall and auditorium are finished with an elaborate coffered ceiling and lined with wood. The conference rooms, restaurant and bar areas are similarly finished.
The elongated landscaped inner courtyard of the site with its colonnaded fountains offers a high-quality environment.
