The new Howard Johnson Hotel in Dalian, China, was opened in September 2008. gmp not only designed the architecture and complete interior design, but was also responsible for the onsite construction administration.
The approximately 300 hotel rooms and suites in the 5 star hotel are accessed by means of a 30 m high and elongated atrium. The reception, lobby, lounge and restaurants with show cooking zones as well as a conference area with ocean view are located at the base of the building.
The hotel is part of the Dalian Financial Center ensemble. The two towers with an approximate height of 256 m each are expected to be completed in 2009.
Lobby and Lobby Lounge
The two storey entrance hall is completely clad with beige colored natural stone from France. It is the primary material in the hotel in combination with stucco lustro wall coverings, palisander wood, matte suede leather and metallic screens. The reception desk is covered with brown suede leather and functions as the focal and distribution point to the elevators and the hotel room levels. Passing through the entrance hall, which has been conceived as a flowing room, the hotel guest is directed to the lobby lounge, which has been outfitted with a cocktail bar. The generous and comfortable lounge seating accounts for early evening relaxation.
The restaurant on the second level, conceived as a spatial continuum, offers a variety of dining options including:
- an area for breakfast, afternoon tea and a pastry shop,
- a standing area for a last minute breakfast for guests on the go,
- a centrally located restaurant with show cooking facilities for western and Asian spe-cialties.
Conference and Wellness Areas
The business center and conference areas are located on the 4th floor.
A large banquet hall equipped with a la carte seating for 300 guests can be subdivided by means of sliding doors into smaller spaces accordingly.
A small spa serves the in-house guests. The spa offers a sauna and a steam bath as well as a wood covered roof terrace with a drink service at the juice bar.
An elongated and slender atrium vertically connects all floors from the 5th to the 12th level and serves as a means of access to the hotel rooms.
The room program includes a standard hotel room, junior suites as well as a series of executive levels with suites of various sizes and layout. Each hotel room has either a balcony or a so called "French window" and can be naturally ventilated. The bathroom has been inserted into the room as a "wooden box". The window between the bathroom and the hotel room can be closed using sliding wood panels. A long sideboard located across from the king size bed serves as a make-up table and a desk.
