Conversion of the Central Station and the Urban Environment

The study for "Munich 21" is part of the future vision of "Deutsche Bahn AG", to convert huge terminus train stations by relocating the tracks underground and returning the area now covered by railway lines to the city centres. After the relocation of the tracks between the main station and Freidenheimer bridge, Munich will reclaim approx. 120 ha. The organisational element of the proposed scheme is an avenue, 160 m wide and 3 km long, lined with several rows of trees, walkways, playgrounds, pools and activity zones. The avenue is the counterpart to Ludwigsstraße and adds to the recreational qualities of the city. The design proposes a 40 per cent housing and 60 per cent working usage, structured in a rhythmic variation of built areas and open spaces. The main station itself is converted into a large service centre. Long-distance train traffic passes 37m below street level through the transit station. This takes the form of an impressive hall, spanning over 110 m, framed by six gallery levels. The concourse roof is constructed from triangulated tensile trusses. The proposed station’s floor area measures more than 400,000 m².
