The large-scale building volume is a combination of a form penetrating the socle along the site boundaries and a circular form, which continues the different eaves heights of the neighbouring buildings with flowing projections and recesses. These staggering heights optically reduce the building’s dimension. Storey-high pilaster strips made from cast aluminium are an integral part of the façade construction, generating a continuous cohesion of the building even across various internal uses. A large video screen of approx. 70 m² attracts the attention of passerbys. Shop areas are situated on the ground floor and on the first and second floors, a hotel with the appertaining conference and gastronomic areas as well as an art gallery are located on levels 3 to 10.
Swissôtel in Ku’damm-Eck
The reception foyer at Augsburger Straße – emphasized by a three-storeyed volume – forms the ground level entrance to the hotel. The guests reach the hotel lobby on the third floor via two glazed lifts. The theme of the curved façade is continued in the interior composition of the hotel: Curved walls clad with wooden lamellas characterize the foyer as well as the third floor and the mezzanine level above. A glazed roof towards the inner courtyard allows for a sufficient lighting of the two-storeyed lobby. A spiral stair leads to the mezzanine level, where a total of nine larger and four smaller conference rooms is available. From the ballroom as well as from the restaurant the guests enjoy an open view towards Kurfürstendamm and Café Kranzler on the opposite street side through the generously glazed façade.
The 316 hotel rooms of the five star category are distributed on the fourth to tenth floor. Towards the outside they are orientated to the street and towards the interior to the seven-storeyed open inner courtyard. Due to the building’s irregular plan concept, more than 15 different room types exist, varying regarding size and form. All rooms are however based on an identical material and design concept. Light wood dominates in all rooms. A continuous, low sideboard connects all fitted furniture such as bed, chairs, desk, boards and wardrobe, simultaneously integrating the large window area as a window seat in the design of the room. As a result a continuous horizontal line dominates besides the warm tone of the wooden interior.
